Big changes are in store for Boulder Valley Ranch, aimed at making the area more fun and accessible for cyclists and adaptive cyclists. The City of Boulder has announced a major trail improvement project that will transform this scenic spot into an even better place to ride. Whether you’re a mountain biker, gravel cyclist or someone who uses adaptive cycling equipment, these updates will bring a fresh and enjoyable experience to the trails.
What’s Changing at Boulder Valley Ranch?
The upcoming improvements will focus on making the trails better for mountain bikers and adaptive cyclists. Here’s what you can expect:
- Bike-Friendly Trails: Six miles of trails will be improved specifically for mountain biking, enhancing the flow, safety, and sustainability of the trails. These changes are designed to make the riding experience smoother and more fun, whether you’re tackling technical sections or cruising through flowy paths.
- New Trails for Bikes: Three miles of trails that were previously only open to hikers and equestrians will now be accessible to cyclists. This means more options to explore and enjoy Boulder Valley Ranch on two wheels, with new terrain that’s been designed with riders in mind.
A Focus on Adaptive Cycling
In an effort to make the outdoors more inclusive, the project also prioritizes accessibility for adaptive cyclists. The new and improved trails will be designed to accommodate a wider range of cycling abilities, ensuring that people with disabilities can explore Boulder Valley Ranch with greater ease and comfort. It’s a big step toward making the trails fun for everyone, no matter their riding style or needs.
Project Details
- Cobalt Trail: historically closed to bikes, will be rerouted to improve sustainability and create a more flowy ride for cyclists, enhancing the overall experience while better aligning with the natural terrain.
- Degge Trail will now be open to cyclists, offering new access for riders in the area while maintaining its multi-use status.
- Hidden Valley Trail: This trail will be optimized for multi-use, allowing cyclists, hikers, and equestrians to enjoy improved access and better trail conditions for all users.
- Eagle Trail reroute will eliminate the eroded, rocky, and steep section, providing a more flowy and accessible experience for all trail users, especially cyclists.
- Shale Trail: This new trail will be designated for hikers and equestrians only, preserving it as a peaceful option for non-cycling trail users while adding variety to the trail network.
BMA’s Role in the Cobalt Reroute
Exciting news—BMA has been tasked with completing half of the Cobalt reroute, a critical part of this trail enhancement. BMA’s Trail Programs Director Mike Rutter began work on this project on September 9, with the goal of rerouting the trail to improve flow and sustainability. Once the work is completed, the trail will be open to cyclists, offering a new and improved riding experience.
This reroute is another part of BMA’s ongoing commitment to improving trail access and making Boulder Valley Ranch a better place to ride for all cyclists.
Goals and Timeline
The goal of the project is to create a balanced trail network that serves hikers, equestrians, cyclists, and adaptive cyclists while maintaining the beauty and sustainability of the area. Boulder Valley Ranch will continue to be a peaceful and enjoyable spot for outdoor lovers, but with improved trails that offer more fun and versatility for cyclists.
Construction is expected to start in 2024 and last through 2026, and the improvements will roll out in phases. While some trail sections may be temporarily closed during construction, the end result will be well worth it for anyone who loves to ride.
Why This Matters
Boulder Valley Ranch has been a local favorite for many outdoor activities, but these trail improvements will make it even more appealing to cyclists. With trails optimized for bikes and more access for adaptive cyclists, the area will become a more fun and inclusive destination for riders of all abilities.
