Scott Gurst

As founder and head coach of Brute Squad for the last 6 seasons, Scott has helped mountain bikers attain higher levels of athletic performance, execute to their full potential, and achieve their goals in events from short sprint races to long endurance rides. As a passionate mountain biker, Scott has participated in numerous events from durations of 20 minutes to 18 hours, including Breck 68, Laramie Enduro, Laramie Range Epic, Dakota Five-O, Leadville Silver Rush, Ridgeline Rampage, Voodoo Fire, the full Winter Park Series, CU short track races, Vail 100, 24 Hours of Moab (team), and 18 Hours of Fruita (team and solo).

Combining his love for mountain biking with his personal experience as a competitor and his professional experience as a coach, Scott has enjoyed continued improvements in performance in mountain bike competitions, resulting in several podium finishes, and more importantly, the satisfaction from comes from performing to one’s full potential on race day.

Scott is excited for the opportunity to share his experiences, and help the members of the Brute Squad train for optimum performance, prepare for the test of competition, and experience the fulfillment that comes from completing a challenging journey and attaining a goal that might not have been dreamed possible.

“I fundamentally believe that we are all more capable than we realize. If we can create a safe, supportive, and positive environment where athletes are not afraid to challenge themselves, test their limits, and venture out of their comfort zones, greatness can be drawn out of us all, regardless of where we start from. With the guidance of a coach, the support of a group, and a bit of courage and determination, I have seen ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things, and in doing so, transform their lives.”

Adam Rongey

Adam loves to be on his bike whenever possible. He has over 25 years of riding experience, and has participated in numerous endurance events, including 18 Hours of Fruita, Voodoo Fire, Ridgeline Rampage, PV Derby, Laramie Enduro, Breck 32, BMA Sufferfest, multiple century rides, and the Triple Bypass twice. “I’m excited for another year as a Brute Squad coach!  I look forward to sharing my passion and love for mountain biking with all of our athletes.  I believe training with a solid group of like-minded individuals is a great way to stay accountable and get the most out of your fitness. Believing in yourself, being dedicated to the program, and having the support of the group and coaches is the way to a very successful season!  I’m fired-up, lets ride!”

Will Baird

Will is a multi-disciplined endurance athlete with a broad reach of experience as a road cyclist, mountain biker, triathlete, and adventure racer. He has participated in several week long road biking evets, including Cycle Across North Carolina (from Appalachian mountains to Atlantic ocean) and Bike Florida (once while towing his two-year old in a trailer). Will has completed numerous races and century rides, including the MS 150 Hourson to Austin, Adventure Xstream race in Frisco, the Moab Epic, and the Grand JunctionOff Road Epic. Will’s accomplishments include podium finishes at the Atchafalaya adventure races in 2003 and 2004. He also has had the pleasure of mountainbiking in Guatemala, Croatia and Slovenia.

As a self proclaimed “mountain bike nerd”, when not on the trails, Will can be found practicing his slow skills at the neighborhood park, watching MTB skills videos on YouTube, or geeking out about his tire pressure performance from his latest ride.

“I am excited about helping to take some of the fear out of the technical aspe ts of mountain biking. Joining the Brute Squad this season will be a great opportunity to help my teammates with that aspect of racing and training.”

Sunny Gilbert

Sunny has been a swimmer, a runner, a triathlete, adventure racer, and a cyclist. She has competed collegiately and professionally in three of those sports and coached other in two (we’ll let you guess which ones), and loves nothing more than to share the experience, learning, and gifts of these outdoor adventure sports with others. But, don’t be fooled, even though she loves mountain biking, now, she only came to the sport in her late twenties, after several false starts, crashes, and suspecting that maybe some people (herself) were not meant to be mountain bikers.

Thankfully, that turned out not to be true, and she has now ridden almost every blue and black trail in Crested Butte and Fraser (not to mention her home town of St. Louis, MO), ridden a number of 100K+ races, competed in the Elite Marathon Mountain Bike National Championships, and has traveled all over the US to experience the joys of iconic mountain biking scenes such as Pisgah and Dupont in North Carolina, Moab, Bentonville, AR, and many others. She enjoys little better than to shred the gnar with her husband and friends.

Sunny is super excited to join the coaching staff of the Brut Squad this year. She understand the balance that must be struck between family, full-time work, and sport enjoyment. And is looking forward to helping others achieve their enduring mountain biking goals.

Registration for Brute Squad 2020 opens in January. To be placed on our mailing list and receive information about registration, email Coach Scott.
