Boulder County Parks & Open Space announced on March 28, “Assuming no significant weather delays, or other unforeseen setbacks, the south side of Heil Valley Ranch should reopen late May.” This reopening includes the Corral Trailhead, Main Trailhead, Schoolhouse Loop, Overland Loop and the southern end of Wapiti Trail.
When Heil reopens, there will be a small detour on the Wapiti trail. This open space has been home to Golden Eagles for many years. One pair’s nest was destroyed in the Calwood fire and in 2021 they returned and rebuild their nest closer to the Wapiti Trail. Following US Fish & Wildlife Guidelines and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, there will now be a seasonal closure on the lower singletrack section of Wapiti. The nesting closures generally run early winter to mid-July. All trail users will detour on the existing ranch road during this closure.
