Winter at Brainard Lake Recreation Area is a magical time, with snow-covered trails offering incredible opportunities for fatbiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. However, accessing this beautiful area comes with specific parking logistics and winter fees that visitors should be aware of before heading out.

The US Forest Service has announced winter parking fees for Brainard Lake Recreation Area from Nov. 15, 2024 through March 16, 2025. These fees contribute to maintaining facilities, plowing parking areas, free WiFi, and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.

  • Brainard Gateway Trailhead Parking Fee: $10/day per vehicle
  • Annual pass: America the Beautiful pass (free – $80)
  • Free parking: Visitors may park for free on the side of Brainard Lake Road

While there are six trailhead access points to the Brainard Lake/Peaceful Valley system, five remain free to use. Keep in mind that although county roads are plowed, they can still be icy and snow-packed. Four-wheel drive or traction devices are highly recommended for safe travel.
